The olfactory system, responsible for our sense of smell, is intricately linked to the brain. Indicators of TBI Through Olfactory Testing:
Research has shown that olfactory dysfunction is common following a TBI. In fact, studies indicate that up to 80% of TBI patients experience some degree of olfactory impairment. While specific findings may vary, certain patterns have emerged. For example, patients with a TBI often struggle to identify familiar smells, have difficulty discriminating between odors, and may experience a loss of sensitivity to certain scents. These olfactory deficits, when combined with other clinical evaluations, can help clinicians identify and classify the severity of TBIs more accurately.
