Neurofeedback and Substance Abuse

The efficacy of neurofeedback as a treatment for substance abuse has been explored in several studies. Neurofeedback aims to regulate and normalize brain activity patterns associated with substance abuse, with the goal of promoting self-regulation and reducing cravings and addictive behaviors. Here is a summary of the current evidence regarding the efficacy of neurofeedback for substance abuse:

  1. A randomized controlled trial conducted by Sokhadze et al. (2008) investigated the effects of neurofeedback on cocaine addiction. The study found that participants who received neurofeedback training showed a significant reduction in cocaine use and cravings compared to the control group. The authors concluded that neurofeedback may have potential as an adjunctive treatment for substance abuse. (Sokhadze et al., 2008)
  2. A systematic review by Scott et al. (2019) examined the efficacy of neurofeedback in treating substance use disorders.   3. A study by Knyazev et al. (2019) investigated the effects of neurofeedback training on alcohol-dependent individuals. The results showed that neurofeedback led to a reduction in alcohol cravings and improvements in self-regulation abilities.
