Fukuda Stepping Test

by | Mar 12, 2022 | Diagnostic Testing

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) can have a profound impact on various bodily systems, including the vestibular system responsible for maintaining balance and spatial orientation. Dizziness and vertigo are common symptoms experienced by individuals with TBIs, but determining the underlying cause and finding the most effective treatment can be challenging. Enter the Fukuda Stepping Test, a valuable diagnostic tool that assesses vestibular system weakness on one side of the body.

The Fukuda Stepping Test is a diagnostic tool used to assess the presence of vestibular system weakness or asymmetry. It involves the individual standing in place with their eyes closed while marching in place for about 50 steps. The examiner carefully observes any deviation or rotation of the individual’s body during this test. If there is vestibular system dysfunction on one side, the individual may exhibit a rotational bias, meaning they may start to rotate in one direction while marching. This can indicate an imbalance or weakness in the vestibular system on the affected side.

The results of the Fukuda stepping test can provide valuable information about the integrity of the vestibular system. If there is a significant deviation or rotation during the test, it may indicate vestibular asymmetry or dysfunction on the side toward which the individual turns. This finding can help clinicians identify and localize vestibular pathologies, such as vestibular neuritis, Meniere’s disease, or vestibular migraine.
