It is estimated that more than 50% of individuals with TBI may experience APD (Musiek et al., 2004). Even though traditional imaging techniques and medical procedures may not detect the neural damage associated with APD, it can still have a significant impact on an individual’s auditory function.
After a concussion or head injury, central auditory deficits can be present, even in the absence of visible physical damage or peripheral auditory system impairment. The injury may resolve physically, but the changes in auditory processing may persist. These deficits are often subtle and may go unnoticed without specific central auditory testing.
Therefore, it is crucial to consider testing for APD whenever there is evidence of a known head injury resulting from falls, motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries, or blasts, or when there is a noticeable change in a person’s listening ability. Central auditory testing can provide valuable insights into the integrity of the auditory processing system and help identify any deficits or challenges that individuals may be experiencing.
